Brazil customs clearance inland: the advantages of the Varginha dry port

· 2 min read

A dry port (formerly called EADI) is an inland bonded facility authorized by Brazil's Federal Revenue Service, where goods can be stored and cleared without going through customs at the seaport. Cargo moves to or from the seaport under customs transit, sealed and under customs control.

Less congestion

Coastal terminals concentrate queues, inspection delays and high storage costs. Inland, the flow is more predictable: cargo leaves the seaport right after discharge and is cleared close to the consignee.

Storage costs

With cargo out of the seaport soon after arrival, importers avoid part of the port storage and terminal dwell costs. The real saving depends on the customs transit freight inland, so it pays to compare the total cost before choosing.

Lower operational risk

Cargo travels sealed from the seaport to the dry port and is inspected in a more controlled environment, with less handling and less time at the coast.

Close to production (exports too)

For Sul de Minas coffee, stuffing and clearing containers near origin reduces handling and the risk of quality loss. Cargo leaves Varginha already cleared and travels sealed to the vessel in Santos or Rio de Janeiro.

Tax synergy

Imports cleared in Minas Gerais may benefit from state ICMS regimes such as the Import Corridor, subject to each company's and product's eligibility.

When it does not pay off

Very small or urgent shipments may be faster and cheaper to clear at the seaport or airport itself. WW Trading clears cargo in Varginha or at any port, airport or dry port in Brazil and recommends the lowest total-cost route for each shipment.
